The Game of CashFlow

by Ian

Students at Stonesoup have been playing a board game called CashFlow. CashFlow is an educational board game and teaches people real life skills to help them become financially stable. More importantly it teaches knowledge to get out of the “Rat Race” and allows students to earn Economics credit.

To win CashFlow you need to get out of the “Rat Race.” The “Rat Race” is basically the circle of life where one is stuck in an employee level position and is not able to become financially free. Each player rolls the dice and moves to different spaces. There are different types of spaces that one can land on: doodad, paycheck, baby, downsize, big deal/small deal, and charity. The objective is  to get out of the “Rat Race”, which means having passive income from investments higher than one’s total expenses. This can be achieved by landing on a space called Big Deals/Small Deals which provides the opportunity to purchase or sell the deal to another player. For example one can draw a 3b/2ba house requiring a down payment of $4,000 with a passive income increase of $400 and a mortgage of $50,000.  The player then decides whether to buy or sell. A player can also land on the Market Card, which gives them the opportunity to sell big or small deals that one may have acquired

.

I have learned many economic concepts from playing CashFlow. I have learned the difference between a liability and an asset. One may say that this is an easy thing to know, but many people confuse the two. Some people say “My house is my biggest asset,” which is incorrect. The reason why one’s house is not an asset but really a liability because a house doesn’t generate income, until after it is sold. I have also learned a lot about investing in stocks and buying and selling real estate at the right time.

Overall, I didn’t think that I could learn from a board game, especially from a board game that teaches while I am having fun. I would recommend this game to anyone who would like to increase their knowledge about finances and get out of the “Rat Race.”
